Vole - n.
Any of various rodents of the genus Microtus and related genera, resembling rats or mice but having a shorter tail and limbs and a heavier body.
For those of you unfamiliar with this creature let me be the first to tell you that they are a real son-of-a-bitch. Feasting upon roots and destroying everything in its path, these bastards are Public Enemy #1 at Cheney Farms. Although they seem to be dormant or elusive during the summer months, once winter has arrived you can bare witness to their destruction as they burrow under the snow in a labyrinth of tunnels, eating roots, making holes, and killing plants. Evidence of these creatures is dirt mounds, like those of moles, but mostly the trails left under the snow and burrowed into grass and pasture. Armed with bait boxes, poison pellets, a hose, and pitchfork, these vermin can keep you busy most of the winter and repairing most of the summer.
I think the best remedy is to make wood bait boxes that lock closed and have compartments for poison, this will ensure that other animals do not get into the poison and that any other creature attracted to the scent of fish pellets will eat the tasty treat and quickly be turned into compost matter.
I must say that some days are reminicant of Caddy Shack.
